Printing a lot of these? A free account makes the code editable, so you can change where it points without reprinting, and counts every scan.

How Big Should a QR Code Sign Be?

The code should be about one tenth of the scanning distance. On a full Letter or A4 sign the maker prints it around 5 inches wide, enough to scan from 4 to 6 feet away.

Make a Sign People Actually Scan

Size it for the distance

Make the code about one tenth of the distance people scan from. On a wall sign, that means 4 inches or more.

Say what the scan does

"Scan to pay" or "Free Wi-Fi" gets far more scans than a bare code. Every preset here puts the reason in the headline and on the frame.

Mind contrast and glare

Print a dark code on a light background, on matte paper. Laminated or behind glass, check it from an angle under the room’s actual lights.

Test before you print 50

Print one copy, scan it with an iPhone and an Android phone from where customers will stand, then print the rest.

Static or Dynamic: What Goes on the Sign?

Both scan the same. The difference shows up after you've printed.

Static (made on this page)

Your link is written into the code itself. It works forever, with no account, but the only way to change where it goes is to print a new sign.

Good for: a Wi-Fi sign, a payment handle that won't change.

Dynamic (free account)

  • Change the destination any time; the printed sign keeps working.
  • See how many people scan it, when, and on what device.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a QR code sign?▾

Pick a sign above (Scan me, Scan to pay, Review us, Free Wi-Fi, Follow us or Menu), paste the link the code should open, adjust the headline and colour, and download the PDF. Print it on Letter, A4 or a 5 × 7 inch card. It is free and needs no account.

What size should a QR code be on a sign?▾

About one tenth of the distance people scan from: 2 inches for a counter card read at arm’s length, 4 to 7 inches for a wall sign read from 3 to 6 feet, and 12 inches or more for a yard sign or banner.

Can I make a "scan to pay" sign for Venmo, Cash App or PayPal?▾

Yes. Choose the Scan to pay sign and paste your payment link, such as venmo.com/u/yourname, cash.app/$yourname or paypal.me/yourname. The code opens your payment page in the customer’s app or browser.

Do the QR codes on these signs expire?▾

No. Codes made on this page are static: the link is stored in the code itself, so it keeps working as long as the link does. If you want to change the link later without reprinting, use a dynamic code from a free account.

Can a print shop print my sign larger?▾

Yes. Download the PDF and send it to the shop. The code is rendered at about 288 DPI at the page size, which holds up when enlarged to a poster because QR modules are large, simple squares. Ask for a test print and scan it before a big run.

Why won’t my printed QR code sign scan?▾

Usually it is too small for the distance, printed on glossy paper that catches glare, or low in contrast. Print it larger, on matte stock, with a dark code on a light background, and keep the white border around the code clear.
