What Is a WiFi QR Code?

A WiFi QR code is a QR code that encodes your network name (SSID), password, and encryption type. When someone scans it with their phone camera, the device joins the network on its own — nobody types a password. It works on iOS 11+ and Android 10+ with no app installed, and it costs nothing to make.

What you need

  • Network name (SSID) — exactly as it appears, case-sensitive
  • Password — also case-sensitive
  • Security type — usually WPA/WPA2, sometimes WEP or None

Don't know your password?

Windows: Settings → Network & Internet → WiFi → your network → Show Password

Mac: Keychain Access → search the network name → Show Password

Security note: the password is encoded directly into the QR code. Anyone who scans it can connect. Use a guest network for any code you display publicly.

How to Scan a WiFi QR Code

No scanner app needed on either platform

On iPhone (iOS 11+)

  1. Open the Camera app — no QR scanner app needed
  2. Point the camera at the WiFi QR code
  3. Tap the "Join [Network Name]" banner that appears
  4. Connected

Not seeing the banner? Update to iOS 11 or later and check Camera permissions, or scan from Settings → WiFi → Other → Scan QR Code.

On Android (10+)

  1. Open the Camera app
  2. Point at the WiFi QR code
  3. Tap the notification or link that appears
  4. Tap "Connect" to join the network

Alternative route: Settings → Network & Internet → WiFi → Add Network → Scan QR Code.

Printing Tips

Do this

  • Print at least 2x2 inches (5x5 cm)
  • Use high-quality paper, or laminate it
  • Test scan before mass printing
  • Add context text: "Scan for WiFi"
  • Include the SSID as backup text

Avoid this

  • ×Printing too small to scan reliably
  • ×Low-contrast colour combinations
  • ×Glossy surfaces that catch glare
  • ×Placing it out of comfortable reach
  • ×Skipping the test scan

Security Best Practices

Use a guest network

Point the QR code at a separate guest network, not your primary one. This keeps your own devices isolated.

Rotate the password

If the code is displayed publicly, change the guest password every few months and reprint.

Limit bandwidth

Cap guest-network bandwidth at the router so visitor traffic cannot slow your main network.

Monitor connected devices

Check your router periodically to see who is actually connected.

Never encode your main network

Anyone who scans the code can join. Treat the printed code as public knowledge.

Troubleshooting

The QR code won't scan

  • Print larger — 2x2 inches minimum
  • Increase contrast: dark code on a light background
  • Check for smudges, creases, or damage
  • Try scanning from a different angle or distance

The phone scans but won't connect

  • Verify the password — it is case-sensitive
  • Check the SSID matches the network name exactly
  • Confirm the security type (usually WPA/WPA2)
  • Make sure the router is powered on and reachable

iPhone shows no WiFi prompt

  • Update to iOS 11 or later
  • Grant the Camera app permission to scan
  • Scan from Settings → WiFi → Other → Scan QR Code instead
